M&S 'fair price' plan rewards dairy farmers for healthy herds | Business | The Guardian
M&S 'fair price' plan rewards dairy farmers for healthy herds | Business | The Guardian: "Dairy farmers are to be rewarded for maintaining healthy herds for the first time under a new payment method that offers bonuses for high standards of animal welfare.
The retailer Marks & Spencer will unveil the scheme next week, agreeing to pay a 'fair price' to producers which reflects production costs as well as the retail price of milk, and provides incentives for improving animal living conditions.
The move could help stabilise the beleaguered dairy industry."

Rural Tax Cuts
Tories cheer cider drinkers by forcing Labour to scrap tax rise - Times Online: "The Conservatives also prevented two other tax rises: a tax on phones and the proposal to scrap tax relief for furnished holiday letters, which should have come into force yesterday. The tax on phones would have meant 50p a month plus VAT duty on each fixed line from October 1, while the Chancellor wanted to treat furnished holiday lettings as an investment business from this tax year."
The CLA had "welcomed Alistair Darling's announcement of investment in superfast broadband, funded by a 50 pence landline duty to help provide rural areas with an adequate and effective service.
The CLA said this commitment to broadband is overshadowed by the changes in tax rules for furnished holiday lettings which will have a detrimental effect on the countryside.
The President said: "Farmers will be discouraged from developing tourist accommodation because it will only be possible to offset the losses from letting in the early years against rental income from other properties, and not against earnings and other income. Most farmers will not have other properties in order to benefit.
"The lack of Capital Gains Tax roll-over relief will harm farmers when investing the proceeds of land sold to diversify into holiday accommodation."
He added: "If the furnished lettings demanded by families, in particular, are not available, holidaymakers will stay away and rural businesses and their employees will suffer."
So win one, lose one, maybe the scrapping of the tax on Scrumpy will make up for it!
(Of course after the election all these taxes will be looked at again, these changes are just so the legislation can be rushed through the House today.)
